As a candidate for City Council

Bonita brings a fresh perspective and a clear focus on what’s best for our community. Her approach is rooted in thoughtful consideration, seeking solutions that benefit all residents. With a law degree, an accounting background, and extensive professional experience, Bonita is well-equipped to tackle the complex issues that come before the Council. Bonita believes in making informed decisions by carefully weighing both sides of every matter. This challenging role requires dedication; Bonita is ready to contribute her skills and qualifications as part of a cohesive team to represent and work for the citizens of Marco Island. Bonita's strong credentials, positive leadership and respect for others, will be a welcomed and crucial addition to the Marco Island City Council. Bonita will serve the citizens with confidence in her abilities and courage in her principles.

Bonita's Background

Bonita has a Bachelor of Business Administration from the University of Texas, Austin. She holds a Doctorate of Jurisprudence from the Drake Law School, Des Moines, Iowa.

Bonita served on Governor Branstad’s personal staff in Iowa, where her responsibilities included providing recommendations to the Governor regarding budget and policy matters for five State departments:

  • The Department of Revenue and Finance,

  • The Department of Health

  • The Department of Human Services,

  • The Department of Civil Rights,

  • The Department of Human Rights.

As an attorney, Bonita specialized in legislation and administrative rules. Additionally, she volunteered with the United States Peace Corps in Western Samoa. She served on the Board of Directors for Big Brothers and Big Sisters in her state, the Door of Faith Mission, Make A Wish Foundation, and was a volunteer for Super Bowl #52, where she served as one of the VIP Lounge Hosts and was one the Team leaders responsible for 10,000 Volunteers. Bonita currently serves on the board for the Cape Marco, Cozumel Building HOA. Bonita is also involved with the Marco Island Newcomers Club, where she serves as the Chairperson of Membership.

Personal and Family

Bonita was born in Iowa and is a proud mother and grandmother. Growing up, she was part of a family-owned and operated cattle company. She raised her four children in South Dakota.

Bonita loves the outdoors. Whether it’s hiking, biking, or kayaking, Bonita thrives in nature.When she's not exploring, she enjoys delving into history and uncovering stories from the past. Above all, she loves taking cozy camping trips under the stars.

When Covid hit, Bonita traveled and lived in her Airstream for two years exploring and hiking our National Parks, zigzagging over 38,000 miles across the beautiful USA having constant adventures.

Above all, Bonita loves spending her time helping others and volunteering. She loves Marco Island and constantly works to give back to our community.

Pirate Day 2024

In 2024, Bonita received the President’s Volunteer Service Award and the Collier County Museum Silver Award for her dedication to community service. As a volunteer at the Marco Island Historical Museum, Bonita actively contributes to preserving our local heritage. Additionally, Bonita serves on the Board of Directors for the Marco Island Newcomers Club, where she holds the position of Membership Chairperson. Bonita is also actively involved with the Cape Marco Cozumel Building HOA and volunteer her time with the Marco Island Chamber of Commerce.
